Different audiences require different types of writing and communication. It can't be achieved with a single format. In my work there are roughly 3 levels of discourse. The first is the laboratory notebook itself which can only be completely understood by chemists (this is by definition the necessary part of Open Notebook Science). The second level is our blog, which is written for communication with a broader scientifically literate community. Most details of the research work are left out but points made link back to the laboratory notebook for inspection. The third level consists of talks that I give to audiences who often are not even scientists (often librarians and instructional technologists). It does require a deliberate intent to reframe the work for different audiences but I think it is worth the effort for the discussions that it permits.
