In May, Amazon introduced the electronic book reader Kindle DX, touted as a new way to read textbooks, newspapers and other large documents. This fall, six colleges and universities will test the technology in a pilot, which includes making the textbooks for certain courses available online.

The Kindle DX (for “deluxe”) is searchable and portable, a plus for students accustomed to toting heavy backpacks. But there is another reason that some institutions jumped at the chance to try it out: the technology could substantially reduce their use of paper.

Here’s another chance for me to get all crabby and complain about the way technology tends to get adapted– at least at first– mostly to help those who don’t need much help. That is, we give the best tools to the students with the sorts of privileged backgrounds that make education seem an inevitable rite of passage rather than a transformative economic and social necessity.

That’s also true of other green initiatives. Organic foods are still probably too expensive to be widely adopted; the alternative energy tax credits are not yet generous enough to really push the technology into the mainstream. (That doesn’t have to be true, of course.) We do things upside down, starting with those who need help the least, hoping that it will trickle down.

Still, I think that if the universities are willing to resist the inevitable pressure they will feel from the textbook industry, the electronic book could be a boon to affordable education. The problem, of course, will be digital rights management and property. The textbook industry will try to milk students (as always ) for as much money as possible, in effect, encouraging pirating of textbooks.

That debate is likely to create a smokescreen that obscures the real issues, which ought to center around educational affordability and access to information. The real hope is that we can use these devices to link to open courseware and to the emerging ecosystem of free textbooks. Somewhere out these someone is working on a hack for the Kindle…

Education and the U.S. Moral Economy

ORTLAND, Ore. — The admissions team at Reed College, known for its free-spirited students, learned in March that the prospective freshman class it had so carefully composed after weeks of reviewing essays, scores and recommendations was unworkable.

Money was the problem. Too many of the students needed financial aid, and the college did not have enough. So the director of financial aid gave the team another task: drop more than 100 needy students before sending out acceptances, and substitute those who could pay full freight.

Here’s a simple question. Why is it that when a public institution is forced, or feels forced, into cut-backs in programs they always cut programs that help the neediest? One apparent answer is that these programs are the most expensive. Another is that these programs are seen as peripheral: “We believe in helping, but it’s not our primary responsibility.”

This story about Reed College is instructive because it illustrates how the moral economy works in the Untied Sates. It’s easy to imagine a hundred different ways the school might have saved money in order to allow students with little money to attend. Imagine, for example, that administrators and tenured faculty all agreed to a temporary 20% cut in salaries.

I don’t know if that would raise the money they need. But we would have to imagine a very different moral culture in order to imagine that as the first gesture made by the college. There may have been teachers and even administrators at the college who proposed this sort of idea, of course. Obviously, it wasn’t persuasive. We don’t think that way.

American Right Wing Terror

All of us at Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri are horrified, angry and deeply saddened at the murder of Dr. George Tiller this morning. Our hearts and our prayers go out to Dr. Tiller’s wife, his children and other family members, to his brave and dedicated staff and to the thousands of women who have benefited from Dr. Tiller’s compassionate and dedicated care.

The right wing has endorsed violence against Dr. Tiller and others like him for two decades or more. It’s not simply fringe elements either. Fox News has for years hyped the idea of “Tiller the Baby Killer.”

It works too: Tiller had been attacked several times before. In fact, this sort of right wing terror has made abortion increasingly unavailable. Yet his assassination is being called “a murder” as if it weren’t politically motivated.

It seems very obviously part of the crazed right wing response to the Obama administration. The right is most dangerous when it senses its own irrelevance. It starts making wilder and wilder claims, hinting at the necessity of violence.

It’s just a show for most people; entertaining, but no more real than anything else on television or radio. There are always a few, though, who buy the performance completely. That’s the danger.

Writing and Counter-Racism

Fear of failure at school can be crippling, especially for ethnic minority students. Research shows it’s all too common for them to fear that their own poor performance will reinforce negative stereotypes. Unfortunately this anxiety only serves to undermine their achievement, thus perpetuating the cycle. Now Geoff Cohen and colleagues have shown a simple psychological intervention based on self-affirmation can help prevent this downward spiral, leading to academic benefits up to two years’ later.

I have mixed feelings about this report– it’s too early to count these chickens, for one thing. I also wonder if it represents a kind of liberal wishful thinking, a hope that a simple, inexpensive solution might be found to a seemingly intractable problem. If it’s so easy, why did it take so long to figure this out?

Then again, perhaps the real problem is that it has taken us– Americans– so long to collectively accept that racism has profound effects that go well beyond anything an individual can correct on his or her own. It seems too obvious but maybe only recently have we really acknowledged that kids need help with racism.

Once we– or some sub-section of the American “we” anyway– accept that racism is real in this sense then we can begin to try to figure out ways to counter it. We have to recognize the disease as a disease, in other words, before we can even begin to imagine treatments. If that’s true, then perhaps this is very good news.

I wonder how well this would work in situations where the anxieties are rooted in class and gender as well as in race. At my school, for example, I meet lots of students whose fears about school seem rooted in socio-economics. I wonder what would change if we tried this sort of intervention…
